Entry-Level Wiper

The Wiper is an entry-level mariner who works under the supervision of a licensed engineer and/or unlicensed Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED).

The Wiper performs general cleaning and preservation of engine department spaces and equipment, and assists senior members of the engine department in performing maintenance and repair of propulsion equipment and auxiliaries.  In carrying his or her duties, the Wiper will use chemicals for cleaning, such as detergents and solvents, and preservatives such as paint.  The Wiper also uses tools such as chipping hammers, scrapers, needle guns, paint brushes, wire brushes, brooms and mops.  The Wiper must be familiar in the use of hand and power tools.

After completing 180 days' service in the engine room, the Wiper will be eligible to sit for examinations which lead to rating endorsements on his or her Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC).  The ratings are Oiler, Fireman/Watertender, Unlicensed Junior Engineer, Pumpman, Deck Engineer, Refrigeration Engineer, Machinist and Electrician.

During initial service, the Wiper will need to complete several competencies which lead to STCW-95 certification as a rating forming part of an engine room watch, or RFPEW.  The acquisition of MMC endorsement ratings and STCW-95 certification as RFPEW greatly increases options for future maritime work.
